Former New Zealand captain Ross Taylor pointed out where Pakistan were out of the T20 World Cup 2024 as the United States (USA) made their way to the tournament’s Super 8.
The match between the United States and Ireland in Florida was called off due to rain and both teams were awarded one point each, which was enough for the home side to qualify for the Super 8 of the tournament.
Taylor praised the USA team saying that they still have two or more upsets up their sleeves as they have been playing excellent cricket in the ongoing T20 World Cup.
"For now, for them is to, I guess, have a regroup and, a refresh and bring on the Super Eight because, you know, I think, on that side of the draw, anything can happen, as we saw with South Africa and Nepal. I'm sure this USA team will feel like they've got one or two more upsets up their sleeves," Taylor told Star Sports.
Taylor then went on to credit the introduction of the Major Cricket League (MCL) for the promotion of cricket in the country saying that the USA cricketers got the exposure through the league.
"America, the USA team, they have taken the letter, they've gone out there puffed their chest out and played a great brand of cricket. I think MLC starting last year would have given them some confidence in playing against world-class players day in and day out,” he added.
The former New Zealand captain then stated that Pakistan were the favourites to qualify for the Super 8 but after their loss against the USA in their first match of the tournament, their chances of making it to the Super 8 were disturbed greatly, especially with the weather.
"But no, that's, you know, I think. Am I surprised? Obviously, the favourites were Pakistan and they needed to go through. But the USA, you know, I guess after that win against Pakistan, that was always the case. And with the weather around," he added.
