The French Football Federation (FFF) to complain with FIFA regarding racist chants from members of Argentina's Copa America winning team.
The chants were heard during a live video posted on social media by Chelsea and Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez from the team bus following the Copa victory over Colombia in Miami on Sunday.
The midfielder stopped the video moments after members of Argentina’s squad began the chant.
Some players, including Fernandez, sang a chant dating back to the 2022 World Cup final, which Argentina won against France. This chant targets France's star striker Kylian Mbappe and includes homophobic insults.
During Fernandez’s live broadcast, Argentina’s players could be heard singing the first two lines of the song, ‘on passport, French nationality, listen, spread the word, they play in France, but they are all…’, before someone is heard saying, ‘cut the video’.
A source close to the FFF told AFP on Tuesday that the French organisation plans to write to the Argentinian football federation and refer the matter to FIFA.
Two years ago, the FFF also lodged a complaint against racist comments on social media.
Fernandez, 23, plays alongside several black French teammates at Chelsea, including Benoit Badiashile, Axel Disasi, Wesley Fofana, Malo Gusto, Christopher Nkunku, and Lesley Ugochukwu.
The Argentine midfielder was signed by Chelsea in a €121 million (£106.8m) deal from Benfica in January 2023.
Argentina’s Football Federation has yet to acknowledge the video of their players singing the chant during the celebrations on the bus.
