Former tennis star Roger Federer was seen on Wimbledon grounds on July 4 but he was not present when Andy Murray received his farewell after losing his men’s double alongside his brother Jamie.
Federer, who retired in 2022, revealed that he had no idea how things would work out later that day so he made other commitments.
He explained that he planned to attend Murray’s singles match against Tomas Machac which was scheduled for July 2 but the Brit withdrew from it.
“I wish I could’ve been there last night but I already had obligations because I didn’t know how it was gonna all play out. I actually took an earlier flight on Tuesday to be here in case he played his singles," he said during an interview with ESPN.
"Sadly last night I couldn’t be there. I quickly went to see him before the match. I could see Andy was extremely nervous and caring for that very moment," he added.
Earlier, after his defeat in men’s doubles, the 37-year-old legend was honoured by Wimbledon where a montage consisting of his legendary career was shown on the big screen.
Names like Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and others appeared in the video capturing Murray's memorable time on the court.
"It wasn't something that I'd asked for," said Murray. "When I was making the decision around the singles, the club spoke to me and said they would like to do something after one of my matches here. I think if I'd played singles, then would do it after I potentially lost in the singles. If the singles doesn't happen, we'd like to have it after the first doubles match, regardless of the result.
"I'm thankful to them that they did it. I don't know, it feels like an ending to me. Whether I deserve it or not, I don't know. But they did a really, really good job."
Andy Murray will now play alongside Emma Raducanu in Wimbledon mixed doubles against Marcelo Arevalo and Zhang Shuai on Saturday.
