South Africa defeated England by seven runs on June 21 in Antigua in a last-over thriller in the Super 8 round of the T20 World Cup 2024.
South Africa’s win was ensured by Anrich Nortje’s dismissal of Harry Brook who had scored 53 runs off 37 balls. With that wicket, Nortje also became the bowler with the most consecutive wicket in T20 World Cup innings.
Nortje has taken at least one wicket in the 16 innings he has played in the T20 World Cup from 2021 until now.
Batting first, South Africa had only posted a total of 163 runs at the loss of six wickets. In reply, England was going strong Brooke’s 53 runs off 37 balls but he was dismissed in the 19.1 over by Nortje, resulting in a seven-run defeat.
As for the record, it was previously held by Graeme Swann and Adam Zampa. They both took wickets in 15 consecutive T20 World Cup innings. Swann’s streak of consecutive wicket-taking innings started in the 2009 T20 World Cup and Zampa’s streak started in 2021.
South Africa still has not cemented their place in the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup 2024 despite winning both of their Super 8 games against the USA and England. They have four points in their groups’ points table and are sitting at the top.
If South Africa does not win then they will possibly be eliminated by England if they win against the USA and improve their net run rate. England’s fate is also tied with the Proteas’ game with West Indies, as the threat of rain looms over USA vs England and if it does rain then the English will need South Africa to defeat West Indies.
