England defeated the USA by 10 wickets in the Super 8 round of the T20 World Cup 2024 and claimed a spot in the semi-finals of the event.
Winning the toss, England opted to bowl first and restricted the USA to 115 runs in 18.5 overs. Chris Jordan also made history for England as he became the first English bowler to take a hat-trick in T20 World Cups. He finished the first innings with four wickets in an over.
England’s captain Jos Buttler and Phil Salt easily chased the target with 62 balls to spare as Buttler scored 83 runs on 38 balls and Salt scored 25 runs on 21 balls.
"I thought if we could bring our intensity we'd be too good. We've got great options. We wanted to bring Chris Jordan back, he adds a bit of depth with his batting capabilities as well. A World Cup hat-trick is a great effort,” Buttler applauded Jordan during the post-match conference.
Adil Rashid was awarded the player of the match for his crucial four-over spell of two wickets for 13 runs.
“We fought pretty well, set the tone with the ball. Was pleased to restrict them [USA] to 115. Always nice to come here and bowl. It also helps when the bowlers are keeping it tight from the other end. With the wind you got to assess from which end you will bowl. Sometimes you may get hit for four and sixes. Sometimes you pick wickets,” Rashid stated after accepting his award.
He also lauded Jordan for his hat trick and Buttler for taking the match over the line, “CJ [Jordan] is a match-winner, he has been doing it for a number of years. Big congrats to him. He [Buttler] is a world-class player, a great performer. Need to carry that form into the semi-final.”
USA’s captain Aaron Jones stated that they did not play well in the last two games of the Super 8.
"I guess you could say [we've run out of steam]. We've not had a good last two games. Something to look forward at for sure when we get back. But we've really enjoyed this tournament. I think our shot selection wasn't the best. We knew he was the danger-man but we still gave him some wickets," Jones added.
It should be remembered that England are the defending champions in this T20 World Cup as they won the last edition of the T20WC in 2022 by defeating Pakistan in the final.
