Pakistan all-rounder Mohammad Nawaz left his partner Shadab Khan behind in a one-day international during the second match of the series against New Zealand at the National Bank Cricket Arena in Karachi on Wednesday.

Left-arm spinner Nawaz reignited his best form to turn the game on its head as he claimed four quick wickets, helping Pakistan get back in the game.

Middle-order batter Daryl Mitchell was Nawaz's first prey. In the same over, he sent Tom Latham back to the pavilion after a successful review.

After that, the spinner cleaned up Williamson with a great turning delivery, while aggressive batter Glenn Phillips was the fourth to be sent back by him.

Nawaz ended with figures of 4-38 at an economy rate of 3.80.

With his brilliant performance against the Black Caps, Nawaz overtook Shadab to become the Pakistani spinner with the third-best bowling strike rate of 33.5 (minimum 1000 balls), while Shadab has 37.2.

Meanwhile, former Pakistan spinner and current head coach of the national side, Saqlain Mushtaq, holds the record for the best bowling strike rate of 30.4.

Shadab Khan was ruled out of the series due to a finger injury that he sustained while playing for Hobart Hurricanes in the Big Bash League (BBL).

It is worth mentioning here that after a fiery start to the innings, Pakistan restricted New Zealand to 261 runs in 49.5 overs, thanks to Naseem and spinner Mohammad Nawaz.

The left-armer claimed figures of 4-38 in 10 overs, which brought Pakistan back in the game since it seemed at one stage that New Zealand would easily post a total in excess of 300.

Despite losing Finn Allen (1) in the first over, Kane Williamson and Devon Conway stitched a wonderful partnership of 181 runs to put Kiwis in the driving seat.

But Conway's departure, who was cleaned up by Naseem Shah after scoring 101 runs in 92 balls, started a massive collapse.
